Can you get pregnant with PCOS?

I’m going to shut the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard that’s out there in this world of misleading information down immediately. Having PCOS DOES NOT mean you can’t get pregnant. Period.

PCOS is one of the most common, but TREATABLE, causes of infertility in women. If your doctor has diagnosed you with PCOS it doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant either naturally, or with assisted reproductive treatments. However, it can make the journey longer with a few difficulties along the way. But that’s where I come in and I’m here to help!

Are you ready for the good news? Women with PCOS still produce a high number of healthy eggs. GREAT! However, a higher level of male hormones such as testosterone can affect the quality of the eggs.

Therefore it’s vital for us to understand our cycles and to make sure we are actually ovulating.

You CANNOT get pregnant if you are not ovulating – even if you have regular periods. Ovulation is the process where the ovaries develop a mature egg which is then released into the uterus and can be fertilized by sperm.

Women with PCOS usually have less than nine periods per year (however we all vary and we CAN get them back every month with changes to our diet and lifestyle) which can make it difficult to track and really understand ovulation.

A tip to know when you’re ovulating and trying to conceive is to check your cervical mucus. You might be thinking, what on earth is this?! Let me explain… The cervical mucus is the clear discharge you might see in your underwear throughout the month. This changes at different stages of the menstrual cycle. At the start of the cycle, the cervical mucus will be dry but when we’re ovulating the cervical mucus is wet or the consistency of raw egg whites.

Maybe now you can relate to or know what I’m describing. Ever seen this and wondered what is? BINGO – this is your prime time ladies and the best time to conceive. Get your man at the ready (or wrap up if you don’t want a little one yet!)

These are my top tips on how to you can increase your chances of getting pregnant naturally without any complications –

  1. Reverse insulin resistance and understand how to control blood sugars
  2. De-stress.
  3. Follow an anti-inflammatory diet
  4. Track your menstrual cycle
  5. Confirm ovulation with test strips
  6. Start taking supplements

Another beneficial tip is to take supplements to improve your fertility. A combination of myoinositol and alpha-lactalbumin is crucial as it is proven to restore ovulation in 95% of PCOS women. Alongside this, folic acid is a must – this can be found in foods such as green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, and whole grains, but when trying to get pregnant supplements are a great help.

This is the folic acid supplement I would definitely recommend – Get yours here

For us PCOS ladies when trying to get pregnant, it’s highly recommended to make sure your blood sugar levels are balanced. PCOS sometimes leads to high blood sugar levels – type 2 diabetes which can cause fertility problems. This happens because PCOS may change how your body uses insulin. This important hormone moves sugar (glucose) out of the blood and into the muscles and cells where it is burned for energy. PCOS makes your body less sensitive to insulin, therefore, making it harder for it to do its job.

Your blood sugar levels are important for conceiving, having a healthy pregnancy, and your baby’s future health.  Eat a healthy diet with more fiber, protein, and healthy fats.

My number one, TOP supplement to help regulate menstrual cycles and induce ovulation is Inositol. If you’ve been following me on socials you’ll see it’s the only one I bang on about all the time. I’ve teamed up with my ova care as their products use only the purest compounds (and their packaging is lilac!)
